The heart of Africa. Located in the center of the continent and shaped like a heart, Burundi is one of Africa’s smallest nations. Landlocked and largely agricultural, coffee is the country’s main export. Burundi represents only around 1% of global coffee production, making it a still relatively undiscovered origin.
Although coffee cultivation was introduced by Belgian colonists nearly a century ago, it was not until the early 2000s that new initiatives began revitalizing the sector through innovation and quality improvements. Today, Burundi produces exceptional coffees thanks to thousands of small farmers who organize and sell their coffee through cooperatives.
Our lot comes from Muyinga province, in the northwest of the country, where coffee trees grow at 1,700 meters above sea level in a tropical highland climate with mild temperatures and abundant rainfall. The cooperatives process their coffee at the Buthinda washing station, owned by Kalico Coffee Export, founded by Angele Ciza in 1995 — the first woman to run a coffee business in Burundi.
In some regions, women are still unable to inherit land, limiting their opportunities in agriculture. Angele’s achievements, perseverance, and determination to build a career in coffee continue to inspire women across Burundi.
This coffee is made from small, juicy Red Bourbon cherries, handpicked and carefully processed through a washed method, fermented in water for 10 hours, and sun-dried on traditional African drying beds.
With a medium roast profile, we highlight its natural sweetness and create a cup with a clean, fresh fragrance and a flavor profile unlike most washed arabicas: complex yet beautifully balanced, with good body, moderate acidity, and a smooth caramel finish.
As true Fanáticos, we prefer drinking it black — but we must admit this coffee pairs beautifully with milk as well, making it versatile and perfect for latte lovers too.
